Science fiction and fantasy author Gene Wolfe was born on May 7, 1931. He dropped out of Texas A&M University during his junior year and was drafted to fight in the Korean War. After the war, he received a degree from the University of Houston and became an industrial engineer. He edited the engineering review Plant Engineering for years before retiring to become a full-time writer. His best-known work is the multi-volume novel The Book of the New Sun. He has won the Campbell Memorial Award, the Locus Award four times, and the Nebula Award and the World Fantasty Award two times each.
