This report reviews the state of the art for coating systems based on the following approach. First, the application needs were identified and a description of the domain of use was developed. Second, the environment that currently exists and the substrate materials that are now used in the hot section of gas-turbine engines were examined. This, in turn, led to a more complete definition of the coatings systems required. Third, the application processes, the industrial base, and the repair and overhaul requirements were discussed and the support capabilities were assessed.
