The cornett is made of wood but has a brass cup mouthpiece and uses woodwind finger technique. It is capable of great virtuosic display and was featured in works by Monteverdi, Giovanni Gabrieli, and Praetorius, and later by Bach, Handel, and Gluck. In the last twenty years it has enjoyed a remarkable resurgence in concerts and recordings of Renaissance and early Baroque music. Michael Collver and Bruce Dickey have compiled detailed listings of pieces from 200 printed collections as well as more than 1,000 pieces preserved in manuscripts from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. MICHAEL COLLVER teaches voice and cornett at the Longy School of Music. He concertizes and records both as a cornett player and as a singer with Project Ars Nova. BRUCE DICKEY teaches cornett at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and is an active concert and recording artist. He is author of many articles on the cornett and on early music performance practices.
