Dean Edwards Smith was born in Emporia, KS in 1931. He attended Topeka High School and graduated from the University of Kansas in 1953. Smith began his basketball coaching career as an assistant coach at Kansas in 1953, moved briefly to Air Force, and then began at UNC in 1958. In 1961, he took over as head coach of UNC and over 36 years established an unparalleled record (879-254) as the winningest coach in college basketball history. He has won numerous coaching awards, including 8 ACC Coach of the Year titles. He was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1983.

Dean Wesley Smith is the editor of the previous three Strange New Worlds anthologies as well as many other works of science fiction. His "Star Trek" credits include "Captain Proton", "Double Helix Book 2", & "New Earth Book 2 & 5".

A Charlotte NC, writer who has known Dean Smith for more than three decades. He publishes a UNC sports magazine, "Carolina Blue", and was the host of Smith's TV show for 14 years.

Roy Williams, OBE, worked as an actor before turning to writing full-time in 1990. He graduated from Rose Bruford in 1995 with a first class BA Hons degree in Writing and participated in the 1997 Carlton Television screenwriter's course. The No Boys Cricket Club (Theatre Royal, Stratford East, 1996) won him nominations for the TAPS Writer of the Year Award 1996 and for New Writer of the Year Award 1996 by the Writers' Guild of Great Britain. He was the first recipient of the Alfred Fagon Award 1997 for Starstruck (Tricycle Theatre, London, 1998), which also won the 31st John Whiting Award and the EMMA Award 1999.
